Jan/san vendor Essity has closed its Tawd mill in the UK as of 1 September, following a consultation process which began in April 2024.
The Tawd mill was responsible for producing approximately 30,000 tons of Through Air Drying (TAD) tissue paper annually. This paper was processed into tissue products for various brands and private labels at Essity’s Manchester plant. Moving forward, TAD paper will come from Essity’s integrated production in Manchester as well as the Prudhoe mill in Northumberland, with no plans for external tissue purchases.
Earlier in the year, Essity also reduced its UK production capacity at its Oakenholt site in Wales. The company shut down the smaller of its two paper machines at the site and reduced Oakenholt’s overall capacity from 72,000 tons to 48,000 tons of tissue paper per year.
