WH Smith is now calling itself ‘the global travel retailer’ as its Travel division goes from strength to strength.
A trading update for the 20-week period to 14 January 2023 focused almost entirely on WH Smith’s Travel business, with the UK-based High Street division hardly getting a mention.
Travel revenue during the period surged by 77% year on year as WH Smith continues to build out its various brands, such as In Motion. The UK was up by 70%, North America by 31% and the rest of the world by 198%. In the current financial year, 40 travel outlets have been opened and there are another 130 in the pipeline.
At the High Street business, like-for-like sales were flat year on year, but still 10% lower than in 2019. WH Smith said its cost savings target for the full year was on track.
